Guess what? You can sometimes never get beyond high school!
Last week I was at a conference in Minneapolis. At the same time, the hotel hosted a 50th class reunion of a local high school. As people arrived on Friday it was clear who belonged where, but the reunion folks seemed genuinely happy to be seeing old friends.
Then at breakfast the next morning, I sat near two reunion goers, women, clearly good friends. Another classmate stopped by to say hello, and stood and talked. I kept wondering why her good friends did not ask her to pull up a chair to be more comfortable. And then, after she walked away, I realized why. No sooner was she gone out the door that a third woman came up and began mocking her! “Did you hear ALL about her successful children?” “I know! Could she brag a bit more?” “Did you here her name drop about her big-time college friends?”
Can we get beyond 18 pleeeeease?
Big glass of wine to wipe this one from the memory stick. How about the 2007 Summers Andriana’s Cuvee Cabernet? It will not disappoint, as did the class of 1963.
Even after 50 years some people remain insufferable, some even get worse! But getting beyond 18 should mean that you can see the fear behind the curtain of bluster. Maybe they are just afraid of being discovered as living an ordinary life (G-d forbid!). The older I get, hopefully the happier I am with ordinary, but you won’t catch me at a reunion (you can bet a glass of Chianti on that!).
