The debate rages on in our house: on one side, we have the purist, with scrambled eggs only seeing healthy amounts of salt and pepper; on the other side, a bottle of Heinz ketchup awaits.
When the kids were young enough where I had any semblance of control could say “you can’t do that”, the ketchup stayed in the refrigerator during breakfast. If homefries were on the table, then I could understand and concede the admission of the red stuff onto our table.
But on eggs?
I have tried time and again to state my complete and utter discomfort with ketchup on eggs. Every time that I do, however, I end up sounding like a horrible elitist.
“Ketchup on eggs is for people….” and then I find I cannot say what might be on the tip of my tongue.
“The people who put ketchup on eggs live….” and again I find a completely unacceptable sentence ending that I cannot bring myself to vocalize.
Somehow, somewhere, and in some way, putting ketchup on eggs has taken on very negative connotations in my mind. I don’t remember my parents ever giving me that message, however. So where did it come from? Was it the years of waitressing? Is ketchup on eggs the same to me as Can I have that filet mignon well done please?
Readers – please weigh in on this one for me! Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Phooey on you, Claire. I’ll will take Ketchup on eggs and raise you Ketchup with tabasco sauce. My father used to do it all the time when I was a kid and I thought it was horrific. Then I realized one day that I was doing it too. Darn… another example of me turing into my father.
Turning into your father is not the worst thing in the world. But I am still resisting this ketchup/egg combo. FB popular opinion is leaning towards it being completely acceptable.
I prefer my chicken well done, filet mignon pink, tuna seared with a cool center, and each
served with a lovely picante tomato sauce. Eggs, not really unless the home fries demand it.
“Catsup” has gone the way of “tin foil,” but “ketchup” remains the King of my Counter
(but I never ask for it at my inlaws!). Oh, and lets not forget the yellow mustard, I’ve met
several people In this past year that love it with scrambled eggs.
